Who is the leader: the sperm or the egg?

When we think about conception, we often imagine a sperm that “finds its way” to the egg, “breaks through” it and “wins the race.”
But the truth is much more complicated — and much more beautiful.

Fertilization is a dialogue. Not a race.

The egg — the master of selection

- She does not wait passively. On the contrary, it builds a complex biochemical and electrical defense around itself.
- It emits molecules that direct sperm to it.
- It changes its shell (zona pellucida) to accept only one sperm — and its chosen one.
- After fertilization - sends a signal that blocks the entry of others (the so-called “cortical reaction”).

She chooses.

Sperm — the carrier of energy and impulse

- It carries the genetic half of the future embryo.
- Possesses motive power — but cannot fertilize if it is not “allowed”.
- Performs an acrosomal reaction to pass through the shells of the ovum.
- Participates in the “activation” of the ovum — through calcium signals.

He offers.

So... who's the host?

Both of you. But if we have to put it metaphorically, the sperm is the goalkeeper who passes the ball.
It is the egg that decides whether to score a goal.

In other words:
- Sperm is aspiring;
- The ovum admits;
- Fertilization occurs when both are ready.

What does this mean in embryology?

As embryologists, we see this subtle process every day — especially in the ICSI procedure, when the selected sperm is injected directly into the egg.

But even then, the egg must accept. To activate. To create the future division.
That's why even with a perfectly looking sperm, some eggs don't get fertilized — because biology has its own deep mechanisms of judgment.

Conclusion

Fertilization is not a race, but harmony. It's not submission, it's interaction.
And in this dance, the egg and the sperm play equal but different roles.

There is no winner. There is consent. And when that happens, life is born.
