When we hear the diagnosis of endometriosis
“Endometriosis.”
A word that often comes after a long search for answers — about pain, irregular cycle, difficulty getting pregnant.
A word that brings both relief from clarity and fear of the unknown.
What exactly is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which cells similar to those of the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) grow outside the uterine cavity - on the ovaries, tubes, bladder, intestines, etc. These cells respond to the monthly hormonal cycle — they thicken, bleed, become inflamed. But since they have no way out, they lead to:
- Chronic pain (especially during a cycle);
- Adhesions between organs;
- Ovarian cysts (endometriomas);
- Fertility problems.
What causes endometriosis?
The exact cause is not yet fully understood. A role is considered to be played by:
- Genetic predisposition;
- Disorders in the immune system;
- Hormonal imbalance;
- Retrograde menstruation (blood returning to the abdominal cavity).
How does it affect fertility?
- Changes the structure of the ovaries and tubes;
- Leads to an inflammatory environment that makes fertilization and implantation difficult;
- Reduces ovarian reserve in the presence of cysts and surgeries.
Up to 30— 50% of women with endometriosis have difficulty conceiving.
Is there a cure?
Endometriosis is a chronic disease, but it can be controlled. Approaches include:
- Hormonal treatment (to suppress cyclic activity);
- Operative treatment (laparoscopy to remove foci and adhesions);
- Painkillers and anti-inflammatory therapies;
- Reproductive assistance — in vitro fertilization if there are fertility difficulties.
There is hope
Living with endometriosis is not easy. But you're not alone. More and more doctors, patients and communities are speaking out.
And most importantly, there are opportunities. With proper care, medical approach and support, many women with endometriosis become mothers.
And the strongest word you can associate with this diagnosis is not “fear,” but “opportunity.”
